Installation Of VIP.net

Before you start make sure you have the following files.

  • Installing VIP.net.doc (this document)
  • dotnetfx.exe
  • setup.msi
  • empty20070613vip902l.bak (or a similarly named .bak file provided by Houston Medical)
  • Houston Medical Licence.lic
  • autotest.txt
  • MD Visual Obs.zip (a test UDF file to import, must be in same folder as autotest.txt)

Step 1: Install SQL Server 2005

If you do not already have a server with SQL Server 2005 then you must install SQL Server 2005 on a suitable server with either Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP (2000 and Vista are not supported). VIP.net requires “Reporting Services” be installed as part of SQL Server 2005, and this in turn requires IIS to be a functional part of the operating system (IIS must be installed and configure prior to the SQL Server install). The default install settings of SQL Server 2005 are fine, except that VIP.net uses Windows Authentication.

Any Service packs for SQL Server 2005 should be installed if available.

All the following steps must take place on the server with SQL Server 2005 installed.

Step 2: Install .NET Framework 2.0

Make sure you have the .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Run the dotnetfx.exe program. If you already have .net installed then you will just see the Maintenance Mode screen and you can cancel. Otherwise, proceed with the .net framework installation as the wizard instructs.

Step 3: Install VIP.net

Run the VIP.net setup.msi. The only option here is wether to install for all users or just one user. You should install for all users if that is what is intended. Once this has completed you will have a new short cut under Houston Medical call VIP.net

Step 4: Create the database

Launch VIP.net. On the login screen enter the user name and password as “a” and “a” (this only works for the Houston Medical issued empty database, for other databases you must contact Houston Medical). Then click on the “Options” button, enter the name of your server and “empty” for the database name. Now click on “OK”. You will be asked if you want to create the database, click on “Yes”. You will then be asked to select a database to restore from, select the “empty20070613vip902l.bak” (or similarly named) database backup file and click on “Open”. You will then be asked to select a folder for the database. Unless you specifically want choose a different folder click on “OK” to accept the default folder. The database will then be restored and you will be told that the database must be upgraded. This is normal, click on “OK”. You will then be notified that you don’t have a licence file. Click on “OK”.

Step 5: Import a licence

On the main menu select File, Utilities, Import Licence. The select the Houston Medical Licence.lic file and click on “Open”, then “Yes”, then “OK”.

Step 6: Create a Directory “vipworkarea”

Create a directory “vipworkarea” on the server machine. Share this folder and give it full permissions for everyone. This directory is used for LiveUpdate and any future utilities.

Automatic testing (optional)

After importing the licence file you must login again. On the main menu select Test, Test and then click on “AutoTest”. When prompted for a file, find and select “autotext.txt” and click on “Open”. Do not touch the computer while the automatic test is running. The test will typically take less the 5 minutes.
