Single User / Server

Overview: The Houston Medical package runs primarily from a single hgp directory located on the root of the C:, or on a network share. Under the hgp there are two subdirectories, being execute and data. The execute folder contains all the program files data contains the database. A third folder is hmedwin which is located on the C: root of the single user, and on a network, on all the workstations.

Setting up: There are two files which need modifying before the program will run effectively, being config.sys and autoexec.bat on a W9x machine, and config.nt and autoexec.nt on a NT based machine. See below for instructions how to modify these files.

The Houston Medical Install CD

Contents:

Goodies & Manual install files {Additional tools that may come in handy}

HGP {This installs the Houston GP program}

Hmedwin {This is the Windows version of Houston GP}

The above list is the contents of the Install CD. The words in bold type are folders or directories.

If the installation is a brand new one (you have not used Houston before or Houston is not on the system), the order of installation is as follows:

1. Installing the Houston program

2. Altering Autoexec.bat and Config.sys

3. Installing Houston Medical for Windows

If you have any hesitation, call the support staff for help.

Step 1 Installing the Houston program

There is no Installation Wizard or Setup program for the 16-bit windows. Instead the progam must be manually installed. If you are replacing an old or faulty computer, it is best just to copy the entire hgp folder and subfolders directly across to the new computer. If you have done this, skip to the next setup, Installing Houston Windows.

From your Houston Medical Installation CD

  1. Copy the entire HGP directory to the C: drive of your server (the computer that will hold all of the data).
  2. To do this click on Start>Programs>Windows Explorer.
  3. This will open a window with a split screen. Click on the + next to the CD-ROM to expand the contents of the drive.
  4. Single click on the HGP folder, then click on Edit>Copy.
  5. Then single click on the C: drive, click on Edit>Paste.
  6. Once this has finished copying, click on the + next to HGP and then the + next to Execute.
  7. Click on Edit>Select All, then click on File>Properties. You will notice there is a tick in the Read Only box at the bottom of the window.
  8. Click on the tick to remove it from the box then click on OK.
  9. Once this has been done, click on the Data folder in the left column.
  10. Click on Edit>Select All, then click on File>Properties. Click on the tick to remove the tick from the Read Only box then click on OK.
  11. Close all open windows.

If you are going to be using a backed up database or restoring a current database to a new installation, manually unzip or copy the database to the hgpdata directory, overwriting the blank database which was supplied with the Installation CD.

Step 2 Altering the Windows Config Files

NOTE: After altering these two configuration files you must re-start your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step 3 Installing Houston Medical for Windows

The installation program for Houston Medical for Windows can be run from within Windows. Just follow the steps below.

To install Hmedwin:

  1. Go to the Windows Start Button and choose Run.
  2. In the box, type d:hmedwindisk1setup without the quote marks.
  3. Use the default choices in the setup program and when the Window appears asking for the location of disk 2, change the text in the box to read d:hmedwindisk2 and press the OK button.
  4. Once complete, you will need to create a file called: hmedpath.txt in the c:hmedwin directory. To creat this file, open up the folder from My Computer, right click and choose NEW, then TEXT DOCUMENT. Call the file hmedpath.txt or (hmedpath if your Windows Explorer settings are to”hide-file extensions for known file types”). Open the file up and type the path to the hgpexecute directory. For example: c:hgpexecute for most machines. To check that the file is named correctly, right click the file when complete and choose PROPERTIES. The MS-DOS name should be: hmedpath.txt

NOTE: D: stands for whichever drive your CD-ROM is (i.e. d, e, f, or even r)

Step 4 Installing Your License File

Without your license file the program will not function. This file is stamp.dbf and is located on the hgpexecute directory. If you do not have one, contact the Houston Medical Helpdesk prior to installation and request one to be sent to you by either email or floppy disk. The license file controls what modules are available and also the number of computers which may access the program simultaneously. Once you receive your license file, copy it to the hgpexecute directory.

Step 5 Running the Program

The Houston Medical Package runs in two modes: a full DOS text-only environment, and a Windows Graphical Shell.

Both the versions of the program are run direct from shortcuts on the desktop.

Creating a shortcut for the DOS version of Houston Medical

  1. Right-click on the desktop, select NEW, then SHORTCUT
